Roney Devassia

Artist,Illustrator and Animator

Roney brings over 15 years of combined industry and pedagogical experience to the field of visual arts. He earned his Bachelor’s in Animation Film Design from the National Institute of Design and his Master’s in Animation Design from IDC, IIT Bombay. His professional practice encompasses a wide range of media, including 2D animation, graphic narratives, painting, and cover design.

Painting

Roney is an art practitioner who merges traditional techniques (watercolor, acrylic, oil pastels etc) with modern digital tools. His commitment to outdoor sketching and plein air painting serves as the foundation for his broader creative work.

Illustration

Roney is an established illustrator with over 100 published books and a portfolio featured in major publications like Mathrubhumi, DC Books, and KSICL. His work is notably versatile, ranging from whimsical children’s literature to sophisticated editorial illustrations for Weeklies and Magazines.

Animation

With over six years in the industry, Roney has worked at premier studios like Graphiti Multimedia, Charuvi Design Labs, and ValueLabs. Alongside a successful freelance career, he is dedicated to independent, auteur-driven filmmaking that pushes the boundaries of animation.

Cover Design

In addition to his interior illustrations, Roney has established a significant presence in cover design for major publishing houses, including DC Books, Mathrubhumi Books, KSICL, and TBS. His ability to distill a book’s narrative into a single, striking image has made him a sought-after designer for both literary and educational titles.

Wall Mural

For the Navajeevanbethany Vidyala Kindergarten, Trivandrum, Roney executed a large-scale project spanning three floors. By conceptualizing custom illustrations and a centerpiece feature wall, he transformed the school’s architecture into a vibrant, immersive space for early learners.

Graphic Narrative

An explorer of sequential art, Roney has collaborated with Blaft Publications and featured in the Obliterary Journal for his graphic documentation of "Karunabhavanam." He is now creating independent graphic narratives that push the boundaries of the medium.

Exhibition

His artistic career includes a notable solo watercolor exhibition, "Greenscapes," hosted by the Lalit Kala Akademi, Kottayam, in 2017.
