Jagath Narayanan

Photographer/Visual Story teller

He is a communication designer and lens-based artist with a background in mechanical engineering and a Masters in Photography Design from the National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar. With over eight years of experience in photography, filmmaking, and post-production, he blends commercial practice with personal, socially relevant storytelling. His works have been published in books and exhibited in galleries within India. Jagath’s visual narratives emphasise clarity, emotion, and purpose. As an educator, he integrates industry knowledge with academic inputs, encouraging critical thinking and research focused creative exploration. His practice lies at the intersection of visual language, storytelling, and meaningful design.

Commercial Photography

He has collaborated with well known brands like Titan, River Indie, Fastrack, Cult.fit etc on photoshoots for digital and print advertising, creating impactful visuals for billboards, brand websites, and social media platforms as part of larger communication campaigns.

Documentary Films

As a documentary filmmaker, he engages deeply with communities and lived realities, using film as a tool to observe, question, and reflect on the social, cultural, and emotional transformations unfolding around us. His practice is rooted in long term observation and empathy driven storytelling, focusing on everyday lives, collective memories, and subtle shifts shaped by migration, labour, culture, and time. Concerned with change, both visible and invisible, his films move beyond documentation to become reflective visual essays.

Photo Essays

His photo essays explore stories that unfold over time, using still images to closely observe people, places, and transitions. Rooted in documentary practice, his work reflects a sustained engagement with social realities, everyday rituals, and cultural landscapes. He approaches photography as a narrative form, where sequencing, context, and visual rhythm are as important as individual frames.

Books & Exhibitions

One of his photo essays was published in Memories on a Plate, an anthology from India that brings together personal anecdotes, recipes, art, poetry, and photo essays, exploring food as a vessel of memory and identity. Another photo essay was exhibited at the Bangalore International Centre as part of an exhibition for emerging artists curated by the Agasthya Foundation.
